July Financial Highlights

$17,490  =  Revenue (Results of rents, coffee, snacks & books)

$22,311  = Expenses

$ 4,821   = Dry Dock Operating Loss

Once again our donors saved the day.  Our total donations for the month of July amounted to $4,922.  $3,800 was dedicated to Dry Dock repairs which offset the expenses.  This meant that the total donations for Dry Dock operations was $1,122.  We are really falling short of the projected $3,000 per month.

Guests of the Dry Dock, we cannot make it without your support.

Dry Dock News:

This month saw the replacement of the windows in the front of the building.  Once again our deepest thanks to our anonymous donor.  Also we have replaced the faucets in the East Room bathroom.  Our thanks to our volunteers who fixed our water problems.

Car Donation reminder:

We have had one donor donate his car and he is pleased with the ease of the process.  Another donor is in the process of donating his car.  If you are replacing your car and wish to have a tax write off rather than a trade in, please consider donating to our partner, Car Donation Services, in the name of the Dry Dock.  For more information, Car Donation Services can be contacted at: 1-888-686-4483.

LOST and Found:

Our lost and found trunk is once again exceeding capacity.  If you have lost anything, please check with the counter person.  Anything in the trunk will be donated on September 16, 2010.

Dry Dock Stories: Memories of 2118 Greenwich

Having just moved to San Francisco I was looking for a place with a lot of meetings. I had just decided to quit drinking and wanted to make new friends. The Dock turned out to be the perfect place. It had a homey atmosphere with a diverse group of people and a meeting almost every hour of the day.

I knew next to nothing about AA, was unemployed, with nothing but empty time on my hands. The urge to drink was constant and I was bored, lonely, irritable and discontent. Everyone at the Dock made me feel welcome and at ease. In the coming days I spent many hours at the Dock learning about AA.

I met my sponsor there and have since worked the steps and found a new way of life. Thanks to the Dock   I have made many new friends in recovery. I now have nine months sober and continue to go to the Dock for meetings and to socialize. The Dock continues to be an important part of my sobriety.

Thanks to the dock and everyone for always being there.

Suggestions:

We have changed this section and are now asking you for suggestions that will help us improve the newsletter and book selection at the Dry Dock.

Activities:

We would like to add sections that contain your information.  Information dealing with meetings (which meetings are new, which need help, who is speaking where across the SF Bay area), celebrations, vacations etc.

We will list the meetings under categories of New SF Bay Meetings, Meetings that Need Support, Newly elected secretaries and those who have stepped down.

A personal note:  It was my pleasure to serve as secretary of the "Anything Goes" 8:30 PM Monday night meeting.  Thanks to all who allowed me to perform this very rewarding service.  Welcome to Will who is now the new secretary for the group.  Sandy B.

Celebrations for AA, NA, OA, ACA, etc. anniversaries that happened in the prior month with your sobriety date.  For example, if you let us know that you have 4 years in AA we will list

"your first name and initial, AA, sobriety date"

under the 4 year column.

You might want to include a note on a vacation.  For example, like the one someone told me brought her closer to her family and allowed her to make amends to someone in her past.  The amends reestablished their friendship.

These will bring all who read the newsletter smiles and feelings of gratitude and hope.

Book Recommendations:

We would like to expand our “New Book Offerings” to include recovery related materials.  The new section can contain books on spirituality and self-improvement.

Please give me your meeting news, celebrations, stories and book recommendations.  Preferably through an email "sandy@drydocksf.org" or in the suggestion box in the Dry Dock.  This will truly make the newsletter yours and fulfill the wish we had at the opening come true.

Excerpts from Daily Reflections: August 23

"BRINGING THE MESSAGE HOME"

"Can we bring the same spirit of love and tolerance into our sometimes deranged family lives that we bring to our A.A. group?"

Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pp. 111-112

"My family members suffer from the effects of my disease.  Loving and accepting them as they are - just as I love and accept A.A. members - fosters a return of love, tolerance and harmony to my life.  Using common courtesy and respecting others' personal boundaries are necessary practices for all areas of my life."
